UFC Fight Night Costa Vs Vettori

It’s UFC Fight Night, and the much-awaited and exciting match between the number two ranked Paulo Costa and number fifth-ranked fighter Marvin Vettori did not disappoint the fans! As expected, UFC Fight Night had some fantastic matchups on the main card. So here’s everything about how it went down and who stood up to the test.

The main event

Paulo Costa returned to the cage for the first time since losing to Israel Adesanya in 2020. But it wasn’t without some drama as he could not make weight for the middleweight bought. Eventually, the fight moved up to 205 pounds catchweight. All eyes were on Vettori because of Costa’s weight issues, but he stood up to the challenge. The UFC APEX arena in Las Vegas hosted the event.

The fighters made their way into the octagon, and there was a pre-fight skirmish. The first round took off with Costa charging with some vicious leg kicks. But Vettori was composed and took them well. Costa kept dropping shots after shots, and after about three minutes, he started to look tired. Vettori noticed that and started to take charge and press him.

Round two started pretty much the same. An eye poke by Costa saw the referee take away a point. In the third round, he tried to take down Vettori and succeeded. However, it didn’t take long for Vettori to get the top position after a failed guillotine choke by Costa.

Round four saw more strikes as both fighters kept pressing forward. But it was Vettori landing more significant shots. Even in the fifth round, Costa kept looking for the body shots, and Vettori was visibly affected. But in the end, Vettori executed his game plan well and secured a unanimous decision win.

Prelims

The preliminary round saw some excellent fights. In the women’s bantamweight division, Jonathan Martinez took the win over Zviad Lazishvili by unanimous decision. The strawweight division also saw the return of veteran Randa Markos who picked up her first win in two years over Livinha Souza via unanimous decision.

In the second round, the men’s flyweight division saw Jeff Molina finish the Brazilian Daniel da Silva by TKO. A right hand by Jeff was enough to floor the Brazilian. In the lightweight division, the match between Jai Herbert and Khama Worthy ended pretty soon in the first round. Khama had no answer to the precision strikes from Jai, who took the win via TKO at 2:47 minutes.

The middleweight bought between Jamie Pickett and Laureano Staropoli also went to the judge’s scorecard. After three rounds, Jamie took the win over Laureano. The highlight of the preliminary rounds was the middleweight bought between Jun Yong Park and Gregory Rodrigues. Both fighters went at it, and it was a slugfest. Eventually, Rodrigues landed some great shots and won via TKO in the second round.

The main card

The main card took off with the first match in the light heavyweight division between Nicolae Negumereanu and Ike Villanueva. It didn’t take long for Nicolae to unleash his strikes, and the referee intervened and stopped the match at 1:18 in the first round giving him the win.

Francisco Trinaldo vs. Dwight Grant in the welterweight division was an exciting fight. Despite losing points in the third round, Francisco secured a win via split decision. In the featherweight division, Alex Caceres finished SeungWoo Choi with a rear-naked choke. It wasn’t easy for Alex because he got floored in the first round. But he came back strong in the second round and got the win.

The women’s bantamweight division saw Jessica Rose Clark and Joselyne Edwards go the full three rounds. Both fighters took a cautious approach, but Jessica executed her game plan well and took the win via unanimous decision.

Grant Dawson Vs. Ricky Glenn was another fantastic match in the lightweight division. But it ended in a draw for the returning veteran Ricky Glenn.
